Karmanos Receives Generous Gift from Michigan Department of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars

Nick Karmanos, left, senior vice president of Institutional Relations at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, and Dr. Gerold Bepler, president and CEO of Karmanos, receive a check for breast cancer research from Patricia Patterson, past president of the Michigan Department of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Patricia Patterson, past president of the Michigan Department of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, recently presented a check in the amount of $16,020.00 to Dr. Gerold Bepler, president and CEO, and Nick Karmanos, senior vice president of Institutional Relations at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute. The gift will be directed to breast cancer research. The gift represents funds raised during Mrs. Patterson’s presidency. Each Auxiliary president has the opportunity to design a special pin that is sold by members throughout the state as one of the many annual fund raising activities of the Auxiliary. Mrs. Patterson’s pin was a white cross draped with a pink ribbon. The president can direct a portion of the funds raised to her area of research interest. Mrs. Patterson dedicated this gift to KCI in memory of her sister who battled breast cancer.

Established in 1914, the members of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars live by the motto, “Honor the dead by helping the living”. They set out to serve the veterans of this country and our communities in honor of the sacrifices and commitment of every man and woman who has served in uniform.

Earlier this year, the Department of Michigan Veterans of Foreign Wars of the US also made a donation of $17,600.08 to prostate cancer research at Karmanos. The VFW has generously donated nearly $150,000 to KCI since 2007 to our cancer research program. The Department of Michigan VFW has a nearly three decade history of supporting cancer care and research through community service, advocacy and fundraising providing over $1M for cancer research.
