Sista Strut 2011 raises over $7,500 for BCCCP

The 14th Annual Sista Strut walk, hosted by WMXD (92.3FM) was another great success. On October 1, an estimated 600 walkers came out to the Rivard Plaza at the Detroit Riverwalk to raise awareness and funds for the Wayne County Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program (BCCCP), administered by the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute.

It was a cold morning but morale was high as women and men from all over metro Detroit came together for the cause. The event included vendors, with radio personality Frankie Darcell as the emcee, zumba, and a rally prior to the walk. After the walk, the participants created a circle of hope where they were encouraged to share their story about why the walk was meaningful to them.

“The cold, windy weather really created a oneness at the Sista Strut. Everyone came together and the cold seemed to be the least of anyone’s concern,” said . Denise L. Hill, manager of Patient Services, BCCCP. “The circle of hope was such an important piece to the event. There was a unified spirit throughout the crowd when we were able to honor and celebrate lives.”

In addition to this annual fundraiser, WMXD also hosted a special Pink Gala, September 30. This sold out event featured R&B recording artist Marsha Ambrosius along with music, dinner, a silent auction and dancing. The addition of the gala helped to make this year's Sista Strut the biggest fundraiser yet, raising over $7,500 for the BCCCP program.

According to Hill, the BCCCP program provides breast and cervical cancer screenings and diagnostic follow-up for uninsured women ages 40-64 who qualify. “The funds that are raised from Sista Strut help to save more lives each and every year. Any donation that we receive will go towards screening and providing services for more women. There is a great need for breast cancer screening in the Detroit area which is why the BCCCP program is so important and fundraisers like Sista Strut are truly appreciated.”
