Annual Ferrarotti Fun Run Raises Funds for Lung Cancer Research at Karmanos
Tuesday, September 24, 2013
The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute has benefited from the 10th Annual Ferrarotti 5K and Little Fun Run, held by the Gianni Ferrarotti Lung Cancer Foundation (GLCF) at Maple Beach in Kensington Metro Park.
Shirish Gadgeel, M.D., leader of the Thoracic Oncology Multidisciplinary Team at Karmanos, thanked the organizers and the supporters on behalf of Karmanos before the beginning of the race.
Dr. Gadgeel’s INHALE study and Lung Cancer Screening Program team members were also in attendance and helped pass out information. They were joined by Katy Kaliszewski, Third Party Events coordinator at Karmanos.
The GFLCF was founded in 2004 by the Ferrarotti family and friends in honor of Gianni Ferrarotti's memory. On October 24, 2002, Gianni was diagnosed with stage IV, non-small cell adenocarcinoma, which metastasized to his liver and brain.
On July 10, 2003, at the age of 58, he lost his courageous battle with cancer while at home, surrounded by his loving family. Over the past 10 years, the foundation has donated more than $100,000 to the Gianni Ferrarotti Lung Cancer Research Fund at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute.
Karmanos is grateful for the support of the Gianni Ferrarotti Lung Cancer Foundation, which helped make this 10th annual event a successful one!
