The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute’s Hematopoietic Stem Cell Laboratory has achieved reaccreditation by the Accreditation Committee of the College of American Pathologists (CAP). The reaccreditation is for two years.
CAP is a medical society serving more than 17,000 physician members and the laboratory community throughout the world. It is the world’s largest association composed exclusively of board-certified pathologists and is widely considered the leader in laboratory quality assurance. CAP is also an advocate for high-quality and cost-effective patient care.
“We are extremely pleased to obtain reaccreditation,” said Suanne Dorr, director of the Bone Marrow Transplant Clinical Laboratories and the J.P. McCarthy Cord Stem Cell Bank at Karmanos. “I would especially like to recognize our Laboratory Technologists Jeremy Kittredge, Rosa Barbuto-Douma, Eric Bushrow, Janice Chatfield, Rosemary Milcz and Amy Shaltis for their hard work and dedication in preparing for this event so that the accreditation was obtained. With this accreditation comes national recognition.”
The results are based on a recent onsite inspection by CAP. During that inspection, CAP representatives examined laboratory records and quality control procedures for the preceding two years. They also examined laboratory staff qualifications, equipment, facilities, safety program and record, and overall lab management.
Karmanos conducts approximately 270 bone marrow transplants a year. As the first program of its kind in Michigan, the Blood and Marrow Stem Cell Transplantation Program at Karmanos is one of this nation’s leading centers for stem cell transplantation.
Additionally, the J.P. McCarthy Cord Blood Bank is one of only 26 internationally-recognized cord blood banks accredited by NetCord-FACT and is affiliated with the National Marrow Donor Program. It houses one of the largest inventories of minority cord blood units listed within the Be The Match Registry.
