Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute’s multiple myeloma research benefits from chopper fundraiser

The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute was recently presented a check for $12,190 from the Factory Rat Choppers, Inc. motorcycle raffle. Sam Ayyash, a bone marrow transplant patient at Karmanos, and Tony LaMantia, owner of Factory Rat Choppers, donated a custom-made Harley Davidson soft tail motorcycle to be raffled off to support multiple myeloma research at Karmanos.

Ayyash and LaMantia held a series of bike nights where they sold raffle tickets, and also took the customized motorcycle to festivals around the metro Detroit area. The final raffle drawing took place on Sunday, July 28 at the Plymouth ROC bar in Plymouth. Supporters came out and enjoyed a great barbecue and refreshments. Muneer Abidi, M.D., medical director of the Hematopoietic Stem Cell Laboratory  and associate professor of Medicine and Oncology at Karmanos and Wayne State University School of Medicine, attended the event and spoke to the crowd about the importance of funds raised for the multiple myeloma research program at Karmanos.

“We are thankful for people like Sam Ayyash and Tony LaMantia, who are dedicated to raising funds for research at Karmanos,” he said. “That research paves the way for more effective treatments for future multiple myeloma patients and provides to them the promise of a healthier life.”

We thank Sam, Tony and everyone who helped make this fundraiser such a huge success!
