Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan raises funds for breast cancer research at Karmanos Cancer Institute

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan’s Imaging & Support Services Department, along with four other departments within the insurer’s Detroit office, recently held a penny war fundraiser to help support breast cancer research at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute. Members of the BCBSM team came to the Institute to present Katy Kaliszewski, Third Party Events coordinator and Maureen Bender, director, Corporate Relations and Events, a check for $500 from their fundraising efforts.

The idea for the penny war started because so many of Blue Cross employees’ own families had been touched by breast cancer. Breast cancer is the most frequently-diagnosed cancer among women in the United States, with the exception of skin cancer. Breast cancer also is second only to lung cancer in cancer deaths among women. Blue Cross employees knew they wanted to give back to honor loved ones who have beat this disease, those still in their fight, and those who have lost their lives to the disease.

Cancer research is key to advancing treatment options and saving lives. Karmanos is fully committed to research and conducts more than 700 cancer-specific investigation programs and clinical trials for a variety of cancers. Clinical trials for new cancer drugs, which are available only at a few locations across the country, are preceded by years of careful laboratory research and evaluation.

Karmanos researchers are able to conduct these trials because of generous philanthropic support from community members like Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan.
