The 2nd Annual Scope It Out Detroit 5K Run/Walk, presented by the Chris4Life Colon Cancer Foundation, was recently held at Willow Metropark in New Boston to raise awareness and funds for colon cancer research at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute. The event was held in memory of Jaime Luch of Grosse Pointe and Erica Paul of Coleman, Mich.
The event raised an amazing $80,000, and more than 580 participants came out to show their dedication and support for this great cause. The goal of the event was to bring awareness to the importance of early screening for the disease, which is the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States, and to raise money to fund efforts to eradicate it.
Lawrence Lum, M.D., D. Sc., professor of Medicine and Immunology and Microbiology at Karmanos and Wayne State University School of Medicine and Minsig Choi, M.D., member of the Gastrointestinal and Neuroendocrine Oncology Multidisciplinary Team at Karmanos, said they were thrilled to be invited as guest speakers. Nick Karmanos, senior vice president of Institutional Relations at Karmanos, and Katy Kaliszewski, Third Party Events coordinator, were also in attendance to show their support.
“The drive and kindness shown by the Chris4Life Colon Cancer Foundation and race participants helps to improve the quality of life for many individuals being treated for colon cancer at Karmanos,” said Dr. Lum. “This event is successful in bringing organizations and individuals together to learn more about colorectal health. Chirs4Life’s dedication to this cause is truly an inspiration to all of us who seek to find a cure for this cancer on a daily basis.”
