The General Motors Foundation is donating $400,000 to support cancer research conducted by the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute. The grant celebrates Karmanos’ 32nd Annual Dinner and brings to nearly $7.3 million the combined contributions from the GM Foundation and GM over the last 17 years.

Proceeds support Karmanos’ cancer care and research, including a new clinical core laboratory.

Ultrasound breast cancer imaging device created at the Karmanos Cancer Institute one step closer to FDA approval

Hidden SoftVue, the whole breast ultrasound imaging device created by two scientists from the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute and Wayne State University School of Medicine, is currently undergoing review by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for market clearance. It's anticipated that this first application clearance could come this spring, with several other FDA submissions to follow over the next couple of years. This promising imaging tool has the potential to aid in detecting breast cancer earlier, especially in women with dense breasts.

The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute ushered in 2010 with exciting news:The announcement that Gerold Bepler, M.D., Ph.D., a thoracic oncology specialist from Tampa was taking the reigns of the organization. From there, Karmanos enjoyed a year of robust grants that funded some of the most innovative cancer research going on anywhere in the world, including progress in the field of immunotherapy, oncogenomics and cancer care disparities
