Scientists from the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, teaming with colleagues from Wales and Egypt, have published an article on the identification of a small molecule inhibitor that could thwart development and progression of breast cancer. The article serves as the cover story in the April edition of “Molecular Cancer Therapeutics,” a major journal of the American Association for Cancer Research.

Martin Bluth, M.D., Ph.D., director of translational research in the Department of Pathology and professor of pathology at Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute and Wayne State University School of Medicine, has been named national medical director of Kids Kicking Cancer, a Detroit-based nonprofit that provides free martial arts training as a method of pain management to children, teens and young adults battling cancer and other life-threatening diseases.

Mary T. Barra, senior vice president of Global Product Development for General Motors Company, has been elected to the Board of Directors for the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute (KCI). Attorney Tom Kalas, owner, Kalas Kadian, PLC, has been elected to the Board of Directors for the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Center (KCC), the hospital/clinical care function of Karmanos, and will also serve on the center’s Quality of Care Committee.
