Melissa Runge-Morris, M.D., professor in the Department of Oncology at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute and director of the Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (IEHS) at Wayne State University’s School of Medicine, was awarded a five-year, nearly $2 million R01 grant from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences section of the National Institutes of Health to explore determinants of susceptibility in common diseases such as diabetes, atherosclerotic heart disease and various cancers.

Rod Ramchandren, M.D., a member of the Malignant Hematology Multidisciplinary Team at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute and assistant professor of Oncology at Wayne State University School of Medicine has been nominated for this year’s LLS Man & Woman of the Year.

The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute's 32nd Annual Dinner chaired by Pernilla Ammann, chief operating officer of Mother New York; and Dan Ammann, president of General Motors Company, raised more than $2.7 million, making this year’s event the most successful Annual Dinner in Karmanos’ history. Host sponsor for the elegant gala was Cadillac. Proceeds from this year’s Annual Dinner will assist with the renovation of the Institute’s infusion center, providing a more comfortable and soothing setting for patients to receive chemotherapy treatments.

Elisabeth Heath, M.D., F.A.C.P., director of Prostate Cancer Research at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute and professor of Oncology and Medicine at Wayne State University School of Medicine, along with her prostate cancer research colleagues, has received renewed grant funding by the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) for the Institute’s participation in the Prostate Cancer Clinical Trials Consortium.

The Greater Wayne County Links, Incorporated turns Cobo Center pink when they host Pink Ball 2014 on Saturday, May 3, 2014. This gala event raises funds for the Wayne County Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program (BCCCP) administered by the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute. The Wayne County BCCCP provides life-saving cancer screening services to low-income women and struggles to continue to meet the needs of women who are without insurance or have exorbitant deductibles despite implementation of the Affordable Care Act and the Healthy Michigan Plan. The BCCCP works to fill the gaps that remain even though the Affordable Care Act provides healthcare to many.
