Henry Ford Community College nursing students raise $900 for Karmanos’ ‘Friends Like Me’ program

Nursing students from Henry Ford Community College Student Nursing Association (SNA) presented Kathleen Hardy, oncology social worker at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute’s Weisberg Cancer Treatment Center with a check for $900 on June 23 in support of the Karmanos’s “Friends Like Me” program.

Hidden Join the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute as it celebrates its 21st Annual Partners events, a signature fundraiser honoring outstanding philanthropists who support Karmanos’ exceptional cancer care and cutting-edge research. This year’s honorees are Mary Kay and Keith Crain, chairman, Crain Communications, Inc. The Partners Golf Classic will take place Monday, Aug. 25, at Franklin Hills Country Club. Partners Night will take place Saturday, Sept. 20, at the Detroit Public Library.

They go, not because they are HOG riders, they go for Gerald Blaskay.

Oncology professor using R01 grant to explore origins of common adult onset diseases

Melissa Runge-Morris, M.D., professor in the Department of Oncology at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute and director of the Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (IEHS) at Wayne State University’s School of Medicine, was awarded a five-year, nearly $2 million R01 grant from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences section of the National Institutes of Health to explore determinants of susceptibility in common diseases such as diabetes, atherosclerotic heart disease and various cancers.

Hidden Each year the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) invites people whose lives have been touched by blood cancer to participate in their Man & Woman of the Year campaign. Rod Ramchandren, M.D., a member of the Malignant Hematology Multidisciplinary Team at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute and assistant professor of Oncology at Wayne State University School of Medicine has been nominated for this year’s LLS Man & Woman of the Year.
