The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute once again is beneficiary of The Detroit Red Wings Breast Cancer Awareness Week, which was presented by Team Rehab, Oct. 22 - 26, 2012. Two events involved Detroit Red Wings players and leadership, breast cancer survivors and fans to help raise awareness of breast cancer prevention, early detection and the importance of cancer research.

Representing Karmanos at Wednesday’s event were Carol Kudron and her husband Jim posing with former Red Wings Chris Osgood (left) and Kris Draper (right.) Chris Osgood (left) and Chris Draper (right) with Detroit Red Wings Assistant General Manager Jim Nill,

On Wednesday, Oct. 24, nearly 30 Karmanos breast cancer patients had the opportunity to participate in the Pink the Rink event at Joe Louis Arena. Guests got to mingle with former Red Wings players Chris Osgood and Kris Draper, Assistant General Manager Jim Nill, radio play-by-play announcer Ken Kal, and also heard from Team Nutritionist Lisa McDowell. Patients also took part in an exclusive session with the American Cancer Society. Participants enjoyed a day of TLC with a special skating party and tours of the arena and locker room.

Chris Chelios holds the special limited edition Detroit Red Wings Breast Cancer Awareness scarf with Patricia Ellis, director of Media Relations for Karmanos.

On Thursday, Oct. 25, former Red Wings defenseman and Advisor to Hockey Operations Chris Chelios signed autographs for two hours at Hockeytown Authentics in Troy. For a donation of $20, Chelios personalized an item for fans who in return each got a special limited edition soccer-style Detroit Red Wings Breast Cancer Awareness scarf.

Fans of all ages lined up to meet Chelios, get his autograph and show their support for breast cancer awareness. Proceeds from the sale of the scarves will benefit supportive services for breast cancer patients at Karmanos’ Weisberg Cancer Treatment Center in Farmington Hills

Special thanks to Detroit Red Wings organizers Christy Hammond and Chris Chelios (seated), and Maggie Sweeney and Alexa Hinds.

“We are extremely grateful for the Detroit Red Wings and for all they do for the Karmanos Cancer Institute and our patients,” said Nick Karmanos, senior vice president of Institutional Relations. “The funds they raise fill a very necessary role in our ability to provide resources for breast cancer patients undergoing treatment. This support on top of the Pink the Rink exclusive experience that gave our patients with the opportunity to meet former Red Wings and tour Joe Louis Arena is so appreciated by all of us at Karmanos.”

Twenty-year breast cancer survivor Shirley Malamud and her husband Bernie were among the many who came out to meet Chris Chelios.
