Sharon Helmer, M.D., clinical service chief of the Imaging Department and medical director of Breast Imaging at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, appeared on WDIV’s Local 4 Morning Newscast on Wednesday, May 28, 2014. She answered viewers’ questions via a live web chat and spoke with WDIV Morning Anchor Rhonda Walker regarding the common questions people have about breast cancer screening. The web chat and interview are just some of the ways WDIV Local 4 is raising awareness of breast cancer prevention leading up to the 23rd Annual Susan G. Komen Detroit Race for the Cure®, locally presented by Karmanos Cancer Institute. This year’s Race will be held Saturday, June 7 at Chene Park.

Dr. Helmer discussed screening options for underinsured and uninsured women, and provided information about the free screenings offered by the Wayne County Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program (BCCCP) administered by Karmanos, and other Komen Race-funded programs such as Karmanos’ Helping Hands. These are just two of the local programs that have received grants through the Komen Detroit Race for the Cure. Please join us on June 7 for this inspirational event. Register for the Race today
