Ferrarotti family continue their dedication to helping Karmanos lung cancer patients with bag donation

November is lung cancer awareness month and there are few individuals besides the Ferrarotti family members that have done more to raise funding for lung cancer research and to support lung cancer patients at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute.

The Ferrarotti family’s most recent donation includes 300 bags/care packages, which contain information about lung cancer and services offered at Karmanos, along with snacks and a bottle of water. Donation of the items is a tradition for the family. Patients who receive the bags truly appreciate them, according to medical staff.

Like those she helps, Rosanne Ferrarotti has battled cancer herself and emerged a survivor. She was diagnosed with breast cancer four years ago. She lost her husband, Gianni, to lung cancer in 2003. He was only 58.

Both were treated at Karmanos. Since then, Rosanne started two funds at Karmanos: the Gianni Ferrarotti Lung Cancer Foundation in 2004 to help fund lung cancer research. The foundation’s mission is to raise public awareness of lung cancer and raise funds to support lung cancer research. She also established the Gianni Ferrarotti Lung Cancer Patient Assistant Fund to help lung cancer patients and families as they struggle with the stigma surrounding lung cancer.

Since the foundation’s inception, it has raised more than $70,000 for the research fund. The foundation also has provided more than $35,000 in monetary support to numerous families who are affected by lung cancer and are in financial need.

Additionally, she and her family have organized the annual Lung Cancer 5K Run/Walk & Little Lungs Fun Run, now in its ninth year,  spreading the word about lung cancer and benefitting the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute’s efforts in fighting this disease.

The most recent event was held at Kensington Metro Park-Maple Beach in Milford. Gerold Bepler, M.D., Ph.D., president and CEO of Karmanos, and Shirish Gadgeel, M.D., leader of the Thoracic Oncology Multidisciplinary Team at Karmanos, attended the event, along with other Karmanos lung cancer team members.

“The Ferrarotti family’s philanthropic efforts are truly inspiring,” said Dr. Gadgeel. “This family does everything it can to support lung cancer research and to assist other lung cancer patients so they are supported and uplifted while they fight their disease. Their dedication to this cause is an inspiration to us to work harder for our patients and their family and friends.”
