Gianni Ferrarotti Lung Cancer Foundation continues legacy of support for Karmanos Cancer Institute

Organizers of the 9th Annual Lung Cancer 5K Run/Walk & Little Lungs Fun Run continue their tradition of spreading the word about lung cancer and benefitting the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute’s efforts in fighting this disease.The recent event was held at Kensington Metro Park-Maple Beach in Milford. It was organized by the Gianni Ferrarotti Lung Cancer Foundation, which was founded in 2004 after Gianni Ferrarotti passed away from lung cancer in 2003. Since the foundation’s inception, it has raised more than $70,000 for the Gianni Ferrarotti Lung Cancer Research Fund at Karmanos.
The foundation also has provided more than $35,000 in monetary support to numerous families who are affected by lung cancer and are in financial need. The foundation’s mission is to raise public awareness of lung cancer and raise funds to support lung cancer research.
Gerold Bepler, M.D., Ph.D., president and CEO of Karmanos, and Shirish Gadgeel, M.D., leader of the Thoracic Oncology Multidisciplinary Team at Karmanos, attended the event. Dr. Bepler, a world-renowned thoracic oncologist, spoke to participants about lung cancer. Dr. Gadgeel, who treated Mr. Ferrarotti, was there in his late patient’s honor.
In addition to the walk, attendees enjoyed activities, including face painting, a kids’ craft table and games, as well as lunch, popcorn and beverages.
