Hockey equipment company’s World Hockey Invite raises funds for the Karmanos Cancer Institute

“Pucks for Pink,” the girls’ tournament of the World Hockey Invite by Bauer, a manufacturer of hockey equipment and apparel, was held Nov. 1- 4 at five arenas in metro Detroit. The event raised funds to alleviate the cost of breast cancer screenings and treatment for uninsured and underinsured women who are going through treatment at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit.

Teams, U10, U12, U14, U16 and U19, participated in “Pucks for Pink” and started each game with a ceremonial pink puck drop.  Fans at the tournament could also show their support by purchasing signature bracelets and T-shirts, with a percentage of proceeds donated to Karmanos.

The tournament also included the Pucks for Pink Scholarship. The scholarship awarded female youth hockey players a maximum of $1,000 to defray the cost of playing hockey.  The scholarship’s aim was to honor the legacy of those touched by this disease.

Recipients were chosen based on their personal experience with breast cancer and their contribution to the effort to create awareness for breast cancer prevention amongst their peers at the rink and in school. Mackenzie Chan of Pittsburgh, PA and Sydney Johnson of Rochester, NY, were each awarded $500 scholarships.

Karmanos is extremely grateful to the World Hockey Invite by Bauer and everyone who supported this wonderful event!
