Jack Ripper and his wife Cathy recently visited Karmanos’ Lawrence and Idell Weisberg Cancer Treatment Center in Farmington Hills and presented a donation of $50,000 for the Janet Lynn Ripper Medical Oncology Fund. The fund was established 10 years ago in memory of Jack’s late wife, Janet, who passed away from lung cancer in 2002.  Jack and his three sons started the fund to honor their mother and help others fighting cancer.  For several years they have hosted an annual golf fundraiser in Janet’s memory.  More than $600,000 has been raised for the fund since its inception.

The fund is used to help patients who are undergoing cancer treatment with financial assistance needs.

Kathleen Hardy, an oncology social worker with Karmanos, manages the fund and explains its impact: “Many patients need extra help when faced with a devastating diagnosis, which may be compounded by job loss, inability to work, insurance problems or other unexpected financial issues.  Janet’s fund is an invaluable resource that has helped more than 1,000 patients and we are so grateful for Jack’s incredible compassion and continued dedication.”

Nick Karmanos, senior vice president of Institutional Relations, said gifts from the Ripper family provide a sense of greater security to those patients who need assistance beyond care for their health.

“We thank the Rippers for their tremendous generosity in memory of Janet,” he said. “At Karmanos, our goal is to not only improve our patients’ health but to offer assistance in other areas of their lives as well. Cancer affects patients and their families on so many levels. With the Ripper family’s ongoing contributions to Karmanos, we can continue administering care that is truly comprehensive.”
