Karmanos Cancer Institute announces three promotions within Finance and Imaging departments

John Micallef, executive director for Imaging Services
Peter Stea, executive director of Financial Planning
Tina Strassburg, vice president of Revenue Cycle Operations

Karmanos Cancer Institute is pleased to announce the promotion of John Micallef to executive director for Imaging Services;c; and Tina Strassburg to vice president of Revenue Cycle Operations at the Institute.

The promotions are effective September 1.

Micallef joined Karmanos in October 2008 and has planned and implemented the development of the Karmanos Cancer Center’s Imaging Department. He developed Karmanos’ CT and MR Suite and implemented the general radiography and ultrasound services at Main Campus, as well as the CT, ultrasound and PET/CT and MR services at Karmanos’ Weisberg Cancer Treatment Center in Farmington Hills.  He also has overseen the hiring and supervision of the entire Imaging Department technical staff since our inception as a department.

“I am fortunate to work with Mr. Micallef,” said Sharon Helmer, M.D., clinical service chief of the Imaging Department at Karmanos. “His experience in planning many radiology departments and his technical knowledge are valuable assets to our department. His insight and ability to motivate others have allowed our department to expand and survive against enormous odds. I am so happy to recognize his hard work with this well-earned promotion.”

Stea has been at Karmanos since May 2011 and was hired as the director of Decision Support.  In this role, Stea works with numerous clinical leaders throughout the organization to provide them with financial data for the purpose of improving the financial performance of the operations of these clinical areas.

This is facilitated by tracking where that department has been historically and also comparing them to external best-in-class providers. Stea also has responsibility for the financial “return on investment” for analyzing new programs and services.  Examples of this in the past few years include the new IMCU, ICU, Clinical Core Laboratory, and many other services at Karmanos.

“For Fiscal Year 2014, Pete expanded his duties to include being the primary person responsible for the annual operating budget,” said Mike Grisdela, chief financial officer at Karmanos. “Pete’s final budget presentation package was seen by board members as ‘the best they have seen!’”

With the expanded role as executive director for Financial Planning, Pete will also have responsibility for the capital budget and the Reimbursement Department.

Strassburg joined Karmanos in September 2010 as executive director of Patient Financial Services. Her primary responsibility at that time was to convert the billing system from the DMC (SMS billing system) to KCC (Allscripts billing system).  This involved recruiting, hiring and training a 27-person billing department from the ground up.  She was successful in doing this and in October 2011, KCC started doing the billing on the SMS system and in December 2011, converted billing claims off the SMS system and onto the Allscripts system. All of this went without a glitch, according to Karmanos executive staff.

“Since that time and based on a track record of continued success, Tina has accepted additional responsibilities for the areas of Managed Care Contracting, Health Information Management including medical records and coding, and Clinical Resource Management,” Grisdela said. “Tina has done an outstanding job in managing the day-to-day functions of these important revenue cycle departments. All told, Tina has management responsibilities for 155 full-time employees and she is a tremendous leader for these individuals, referring to her team as ‘rock stars’ and continually challenging and motivating them to do their best work for the benefit of the organization.

“She is a tremendous asset to the organization and is a big reason for its success in the revenue cycle the past three years.”
