Karmanos Cancer Institute benefits from Farmington Hills Harrison High School’s Think Pink Club

Breast cancer patients being treated at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute are receiving generous support from a group of students from Farmington Hills Harrison School’s Think Pink Club.

Two years ago, a student at Farmington Hills Harrison High School had an idea to start a club to help raise awareness and funds for breast cancer because she knew so many students touched by the disease through family members and friends. Her peers thought it was a great idea, as did Assistant Principal Angela Leach, and the Think Pink Club was formed.

The Think Pink Club, consisting of about 20 students and sponsored by Leach, hosts fundraisers throughout the year, most occurring during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. Students have created T-shirts and pink ribbon pins to sell, and have hosted bake sales during lunches to help raise funds. They also have raised important awareness amongst their peers at school by posting flyers with facts about breast cancer and breast health, and passing out vital information about early detection.

Over the past two school years, the Think Pink Club has raised $4,000! The students collectively decided to designate the funds to help cancer patients at Karmanos who are struggling to meet their basic daily needs because of extended illness and inability to work. Funds will help assist patients and their families in meeting needs such as rent/mortgage, utility bills, medications, transportation and other personal needs.

Karmanos is extremely grateful to the Think Pink Club, Leach and students and staff members at Farmington Hills Harrison High School who have helped raise these critical funds!
