The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute’s 2012 Partners Golf and Partners Night raised more than $1 million to benefit Karmanos’ cancer research. Honored this year were philanthropists Julie and Bob Skandalaris of Clarkston who are generous supporters of Karmanos’ exceptional cancer care and innovative research.

Partners Honorees Bob and Julie Skandalaris are congratulated by Gerold Bepler, M.D., Ph.D., Karmanos president and CEO (far right), and Dan Miller of WJBK FOX 2. Cheerleaders from UM and MSU greeted guests as they arrived for the Partners Night Tailgate at Somerset Collection South.

“Cancer is a disease that eventually hits every family,” said Bob Skandalaris. “It hit home for us this year when my father was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer. If not for the efforts of researchers, like those associated with Karmanos, his chance for survival would have been dismal. Thankfully, dedicated researchers across the country have advanced cancer treatments and my dad is still with us and in remission.

“Julie and I are proud to support the Karmanos Cancer Institute and its outstanding research which is helping cancer patients, just like my dad, have the best chance of survival and more precious time with their loved ones.”

Partners is a combination of two great fundraising events that support cancer research. The 19th Annual Partners Golf Classic took place Aug. 27 at Franklin Hills Country Club and brought together 200 guests who took part in a competitive golf scramble, silent auction, lunch reception and an awards dinner. The 19th Annual Partners Night, which took place Oct. 6 at Somerset Collection South, was a tailgate-themed party complete with Chevy vehicles packed with tailgate items including University of Michigan and Michigan State raffle packages. Six hundred guests got to wear their favorite sports-team attire, dined on an array of game-day foods; received Marketplace Bucks to redeem for sports-related items, goodies from The Detroit Shoppe, Sanders products, and more.  Sports Director and Anchor Dan Miller of WJBK FOX 2, the voice of the Detroit Lions, served as emcee.

Some of the exciting silent auction items included: an American Idol package for four people with airfare to Los Angeles, Calif.; a trip for two to Atlantis, Paradise Island, Bahamas, including airfare; and two sets of 2010 Final Four Championship chairs, from Indianapolis and Detroit, autographed by the Michigan State Men's Basketball Head Coach Tom Izzo. Guests also had a chance to win a raffle for a $5,000 gift card from Somerset Collection.

“Karmanos Cancer Institute is committed to providing cancer patients with a higher level of cancer care and that includes innovative research that leads to better treatment options that result in the best possible outcomes for our patients,” said Gerold Bepler, M.D., Ph.D., president and CEO, Karmanos Cancer Institute. “Funding from Partners events helps support Karmanos’ cancer research projects and our mission to eradicate cancer.”

Over the past 19 years, Partners, a group of hands-on volunteers, have raised nearly $13 million through the Partners events to support the Karmanos Cancer Institute’s exceptional state-of-the science research. This year’s Partners events help support the additional recruitment of highly accomplished cancer scientists, complementing the exceptional cancer research already underway at Karmanos.

“Thanks to the incredible support of Julie and Bob Skandalaris who continue to give back to our community; and our generous sponsors, volunteer committee and guests, this year’s Partners is one of our most successful yet,” said Nick Karmanos, senior vice president, Institutional Relations, Karmanos Cancer Institute. “We’re extremely grateful for this support which allows us the privilege of serving cancer patients and their families with the best possible care.”

The 2012 Partners Executive Committee Co-Chairs were Michelle Mio and David Thewes; Partners Golf Classic Co-Chairs were Brian Eisenberg and J.J. Modell; and Partners Night Co-Chairs were Carol Ritchie and Jill Schumacher.
