Karmanos Partners Committee raises funds for cancer patients, their families
Thursday, December 12, 2013
The Karmanos Cancer Institute’s Partners Committee recently held their annual holiday party at The Stand Gastro Bistro in Birmingham. The event was a fun holiday get-together for the committee during which they helped generate funds to support two Karmanos Cancer Institute patient families in need this holiday season.
The Partners started this initiative to aid Karmanos cancer patients who are going through difficult financial times by providing holiday gifts. The Partners want to make sure that these patients’ families still have a merry holiday in spite of the financial challenges they face.
Nick Karmanos, senior vice president of Institutional Relations, served as guest bartender at the event and all tips received that evening were donated to the initiative. In addition to tips, The Stand donated $1 from each drink sold that evening and Partners committee members also contributed monetary donations and gifts for the families.
The Partners are a group of hardworking and “hands-on” volunteers, ages 25 – 50, who have pooled their ideas and resources and joined together for the sole purpose of raising funds for the Karmanos Cancer Institute. Many of these hard-working volunteers are motivated by their own personal experience with cancer. The Partners are dedicated to making sure that other families who are facing cancer always have a place to turn to receive the best in patient care, education and treatment.
In addition to the holiday party, the Partners hold the annual Partners Events, the committee’s largest fundraising initiative. The Partners Events are a two-part fundraiser where they honor outstanding philanthropists in the community who support Karmanos’ exceptional cancer care and innovative research.
The Partners Events include a golf event in late summer and a gala in the fall. Since their inception, these events have raised more than $13.5 million to support Karmanos’ exceptional, state-of-the science research.
This year, the committee celebrated its 20th Annual Partners Events by honoring the Institute’s largest benefactors, Danialle and Peter Karmanos, Jr. This year’s Events raised more than $800,000 to fund cancer research and to recruit top scientific talent. The Partners Committee members are also dedicated to raising funds and awareness for the Institute through many other avenues including hosting jeans day fundraisers; chairing and attending community events, which benefit the Institute; encouraging employee contributions and sponsorships; and serving as ambassadors for the cause.
Karmanos Cancer Institute is extremely appreciative of the Partners for all they have done and continue to do for our patients, cancer care and research!
