Karmanos Women’s Wellness Clinic director receives coveted Nightingale Award for Nursing Excellence

Lisa Chism, DNP, APRN, BC, NCMP, FAANP, clinical director of the Women’s Wellness Clinic and member of the Breast Oncology Multidisciplinary Team at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Center, has been selected to receive Oakland University’s Nightingale Award for Nursing Excellence in the category of Distinguished OU Alumni.

Dr. Chism will receive her award at a special event Thursday, May 9 at the Mirage in Clinton Township. She is one of nine winners and 10 runners up who have been selected for various award categories, which include Administration; Advanced Nurse Practice; Education & Research; Long Term Care/Rehabilitation; Nursing in the Community; Staff Nurse Practice and People’s Choice Top 3. Each winner receives a $1,000 cash award, a solid bronze Nightingale statue and Nightingale pin. Runners up receive a plaque and Nightingale pin.

The 25th annual Nightingale Awards for Nursing ® celebration has honored hard-working, highly-skilled, caring individuals in the nursing profession over the past 25 years.

“I am thrilled to receive this special award,” said Dr. Chism. “I find the profession of nursing extremely rewarding because I am able to help women on their journey through cancer. I also am passionate about teaching the next generation of nurses. I feel privileged to be a nurse at Karmanos and to win the Nightingale Award for Nursing Excellence.”

Dr. Chism received her Doctorate of Nursing Practice degree from Oakland University and received her bachelor’s and master’s of science degrees in nursing from the University of Michigan. She has been recognized as the 2011 North American Menopause Society’s Certified Menopause Practitioner of the Year; is a fellow in the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners; and has published a book, “The Doctor of Nursing Practice: A Guidebook for Role Development and Professional Issues,” which has received an American Journal of Nursing Book of the Year Award for 2013. She also is a member of the adjunct faculty at Madonna University.

“Lisa is so dynamic and energetic that it is no surprise to us that she is the recipient of the Nightingale Distinguished Alumni award from Oakland University,” said Karen Goldman, RN, MSN, AOCN, senior vice president and chief nursing officer at Karmanos.  “Lisa uses all of her skills as an advanced practice nurse to care for Karmanos’ patients. We’re extremely proud of Lisa and are fortunate to have such a passionate advocate for our cancer patients.”
