Karmanos oncology experts join Sky Foundation to hold free pancreas cancer discussion

Pancreatic cancer experts from the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute are partnering with the Sky Foundation and their medical colleagues from other nationally-known cancer centers for a free Pancreas Cancer Discussion scheduled for 7 p.m., Monday, June 10 at the Townsend Hotel in Birmingham.

Presentations will inform the general public and those touched by pancreatic cancer about the disease.

Guest speakers from Karmanos include Philip A. Philip, M.D., Ph.D., F.R.C.P, leader of the Gastrointestinal and Neuroendocrine Multidisciplinary Team and Michael A. Tainsky, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Oncology.

Other speakers include David S. Kwon, M.D., surgical oncologist at Henry Ford Health System in Detroit; Matthew G. Katz, M.D., F.A.C.S., from the Department of Surgical Oncology at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston; and Mark J. Truty, M.D., M.Sc., in the Division of Gastroenterologic and General Surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.

The Sky Foundation was founded by Sheila Sky Kasselman, who was diagnosed with pancreas cancer in October of 2007. She is joined by volunteers dedicated to raising awareness of the disease and cancer researchers who are working to create therapeutic methods for early detection of the disease.
