Karmanos produces final report based on Community Health Needs Assessment Survey results

The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute has produced the 2012 Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) & Implementation Strategy Report, based on the results of its CHNA survey, also conducted in 2012.

Results allowed Karmanos to assess the cancer-related health needs of people living in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties; their perceived barriers to access; who in the community knows about cancer-related health care services available to them; and how people can be best informed about cancer prevention education and screening.

The CHNA survey consisted of 48 questions. Survey participants were asked about their current health status; if they’ve ever had cancer; if anyone in their family has had cancer; their participation in cancer screenings; cigarette and alcohol use; vegetable and fruit consumption; and their awareness of the various cancer-related services provided at Karmanos, among other questions.

Surveys were distributed by direct mail, online and by direct contact at community education events.  Approximately 3,500 surveys were distributed to achieve a 10 percent rate of return and a confidence level of 95 percent, with a 5 percent margin of error.
