Karmanos’ thoracic medicine research program receives support from Lawrence Tech lacrosse athletes

The Lawrence Technological University men’s lacrosse team helped “Stick it to Cancer” and supported the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute’s thoracic medicine research during their recent game against Northwood University. The team raised $450 for Karmanos through proceeds from entry fees and a fastest shot competition.

Kim Belzer, physician assistant in Karmanos’ Thoracic Oncology Department, was in attendance. She spoke about the importance of research taking place at Karmanos and explained how research can provide better treatment options for cancer patients.

Also in attendance was Mike Costello, former MSU lacrosse player and founder of the “Stick it to Cancer” campaign.

“We have a fantastic lacrosse community in Michigan,” he said. “Unfortunately, cancer intrudes on that community. Figuratively, it extends its bony, skeletal finger and touches someone that we know…that we love.”

Costello chose Karmanos as the benefitting organization because of its world-renowned reputation for cancer care and research conducted here in Detroit.

We are extremely grateful to the Lawrence Tech men’s lacrosse team, Mike Costello and the team’s supporters for raising awareness and funds for Karmanos!
