Karmanos to benefit from proceeds of Chris4Life Colon Cancer Foundation run/walk event in November

The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute will be the beneficiary of the Chris4Life Colon Cancer Foundation’s First Annual Scope It Out 5K Run/Walk for Colon Cancer Awareness from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, Nov. 3 at Willow Metro Park in New Boston.

The inaugural run/walk is being organized in memory of Jaime Luch of Grosse Pointe and Erica Paul, of Coleman, Mich. Luch was only 31 when she succumbed to colorectal cancer and Paul was only 29 when she passed away from Stage IV metastatic colon cancer.

The goal of the run/walk is to bring awareness to the importance of early screening for the disease, which is the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States, and to raise money to fund efforts to abolish it. According to statistics cited by Chris4Life, 4,684 Michigan residents were diagnosed with the disease in 2008 and 1,833 people in the state died from it in 2009. Organizers hope to raise more than $100,000 to educate, provide resources and give back locally to the metro Detroit area.

To date, events like this run/walk allowed Chris4Life to donate more than $1 million to further colorectal cancer research and awareness across the country. Education and encouragement generated at the walk have helped save lives.

People can register for the race up until race day November 3. Questions can be e-mailed to Jackie Borawski at For more information, visit
