Staff from the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute recently visited with students at Martin Luther King Jr. Senior High School in Detroit, corresponding with a fundraiser for the Institute and a week full of activities that promoted breast cancer awareness. The event marked National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

 

Breast cancer survivors and Martin Luther King High School administration, staff and students assembled recently with Denise Henderson of Karmanos to recognize October as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and to raise funds for Karmanos.

Felicia Jones, an instructor with Distributive Education Clubs of America, which offers business-related classes to students, organized the fundraiser that had students collecting donations and selling pink ribbons.

During the event, students listened to a breast cancer survivor’s story and received a lesson from Denise J. Henderson, M.Ed., RN-BC, educator in Patient and Community Education, on how eating healthy and staying physically fit can help prevent cancer. Henderson also shared information about breast cancer health during her time with students.
