News Herald Swim Meet Raises Funds for the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute
Monday, September 23, 2013
At the 2013 News Herald Girls Invitational, teams competed not only for medals, but also raised funds for cancer research at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute through the 2nd Annual Swim & Dive for a Cure. Each team at the invitational chose a different cancer cause to support – leukemia, melanoma, ovarian cancer, breast cancer, neuroblastoma, lymphoma, Ewing’s sarcoma, lung cancer and pediatric cancers.
At the meet, two captains from each team raced into the stands to collect spare change from fans. The money collected during the “dash for cash,” along with proceeds from the 50/50 raffle and pre-event fundraising efforts, totaled an amazing $1,383.60! Katy Kaliszewski, Third Party Event coordinator, was in attendance to say a few words on behalf of the Institute and to accept the final check.
Karmanos appreciates the ongoing support of all of the teams and their supporters who helped raised significant funds and cancer awareness! We look forward to next year’s event!
