Ninth Annual Kay McDevitt Memorial Golf Outing Raises Significant Funds for Myeloma Research

Kay McDevitt lost her battle with multiple myeloma in 2004, but her family and friends have carried on her fight by raising nearly $300,000.00 for patients and doctors taking on the disease now and in years to come.

The amount of money raised in memory of Mrs. McDevitt increased this year following the 9th Annual Kay McDevitt Memorial Golf Outing on Oct. 18. The McDevitt family hosted the event at the Wildhorse Golf Club in Henderson, Nevada.

The funds raised from the golf outing, dinner, raffle and auction go to the Craig McCarty/Kay McDevitt Fund for Myeloma Research at the Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit. This fund has helped propel novel therapies forward, making them available for people with multiple myeloma and other plasma cell diseases. The McDevitt family feels that supporting promising research is the fastest path towards curing multiple myeloma.

Pat McDevitt, Kay’s husband, and their children, Todd, Brian and Jennifer, started the fundraiser that also helps fund groundbreaking research at the Institute by Jeffrey Zonder, M.D., a member of Karmanos’ Malignant Hematology Multidisciplinary Team. This year's organizing committee included Pat McDevitt and wife, Phyllis, Brian and Julie McDevitt, Jennifer and Mark Walters, and Todd and Andra McDevitt.

“The generosity of the McDevitt family will permit us to continue exciting translational research projects, examining new treatment targets and overcoming resistance to chemotherapy in multiple myeloma,” said Dr. Zonder.  “The work we are doing in the lab will hopefully serve as the basis for new clinical studies in the coming years.”

To further support myeloma research, contributions may be made to the Craig McCarty/Kay McDevitt Fund for Myeloma Research at Karmanos by calling (313) 576-8119.
