American Society of Clinical Oncology presents Statesman Award to Dr. Schiffer

Charles A. Schiffer, M.D., head of the Malignant Hematology Multidisciplinary Team at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Center in Detroit recently received a prestigious 2010 Statesman Award at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting in Chicago.

“The work of this year’s awardees collectively represents decades of commitment to improving the care and quality of life for people living with cancer,” said Richard L. Schilsky, MD, ASCO’s immediate past president and chair of the Special Awards Selection Committee. “Our understanding of the biological basis of cancer and our ability to transform that knowledge into better treatments for patients have been enhanced by their contributions and it is an honor to present them ASCO’s highest awards.”
The Statesman Award presented to Dr. Schiffer recognizes the extraordinary dedication of ASCO members for their voluntary efforts that benefit the Society, the specialty of oncology, and, most importantly, the patients served. This award is given to volunteers who have given 20 or more cumulative years of service to the Society.
Since becoming active with ASCO 35 years ago, Dr. Schiffer has chaired numerous committees and symposiums that further the work of the Society. He frequently has been requested to speak and share his expertise related to hematologic malignancy research, acute myeloid leukemia and lymphoma. He has authored and co-authored more than 290 articles and 75 book chapters on topics concerning the treatment of leukemia in adults, platelet transfusion and granulocyte transfusion therapy, among others.
He earned his BA cum laude at Brandeis University and his M.D at New York University School of Medicine. He has served on the Editorial Boards for Blood, the Journal of Clinical Oncology, International Journal of Hematology and reviews articles for multiple journals. Dr. Schiffer is frequently named to Castle Connelly’s list of “Top Doctors”, “Best Doctors in America®” and Hour Detroit Magazine’s “Top Docs”. Committee memberships have included Chairman of the Leukemia Committee of the Cancer and Leukemia Group B, Chairman of the Food and Drug Administration Oncologic Drug Advisory Committee, Medical Oncology Subspecialty Board of the American Board of Internal Medicine, and grant reviews for the National Cancer Institute and Leukemia/Lymphoma Society of America.
Dr. Schiffer is also a Professor of Medicine and Oncology at Karmanos and the Wayne State University School of Medicine. His work has been recognized by the College Teaching Award and the Best Teacher in Hematology – Fellow’s Award. In 2006, he received the Dr. John J. Kenney Award from the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society of America and the Celgene Award for Career Achievement in Hematology. He was recently inducted into the Academy of Scholars of Wayne State University, the highest recognition accorded to academic faculty at the University.
