During its 35th annual Mid-winter Conference in Kalamazoo, the Department of Michigan Veterans of Foreign Wars presented a check for $23,164.87 to the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute in support of cancer research.

This generous gift represents donations collected under the tenure of State Commander Kirk Kennedy. Veteran posts throughout Michigan conducted a multitude of events in their communities in 2013 to raise awareness and funding for cancer research. The fundraising is guided by State Cancer Director James Proteau through the VFW State Headquarters.

“We appreciate the ongoing efforts of our Michigan veterans to help insure that Karmanos remains at the forefront of cancer care and research,” said Nick Karmanos, senior vice president of Institutional Relations. “Our scientists are committed to improving access to new therapies and helping accelerate the process of drug development so all cancer patients have their best chance at survival.

“There is more hope than ever before that one day we may truly bring cancer under control,” Karmanos added. “Great progress has been made but we have much more work to do. I extend our profound thanks to our veterans for joining everyone here at the Karmanos Cancer Institute in this effort. We all look forward to a future without cancer.”

The Veterans of Foreign Wars, Department of Michigan, began a program in 1983 to furnish monetary aid for cancer research and dedicated the funds to Karmanos. The VFW has donated more than $1.2 million since 1983. In Michigan, more than 92,000 members represent a nearly three-decade history of supporting cancer research through community service, advocacy and fundraising.
