The fifth annual Torch Lake Antique and Classic Wooden Boat Rendezvous, also known as “Cruising for the Cure,” has raised $30,000 to benefit pancreatic cancer research at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute. The event was held in 2013.
Members of the Jane H. Thie Memorial Fund, Inc. recently presented a check to Philip A. Philip, M.D., Ph.D., leader of the Gastrointestinal and Neuroendocrine Oncology Multidisciplinary Team. The event is organized through the fund. Since it began, it has raised more than $70,000 for Karmanos.
Each year, the Jane H. Thie Memorial Fund continues to advance its mission of bringing hope to individuals and their families that are battling pancreatic cancer by funding ground-breaking research in pancreatic oncology at Karmanos.
Jane Thie, mother of Rick, Russell, Diana, and Carla, was a patient of Dr. Philip’s while being treated for pancreatic cancer. The family was so appreciative of the care that their mother received that after she passed away in 2007, they decided to start an organization to benefit pancreatic cancer research. Dr. Philip’s research was their first choice.
"The Thie family is very passionate in supporting pancreatic cancer research at the Karmanos Cancer Institute,” Dr. Philip said. “I am very much touched by their relentless enthusiasm and their ability to reach out to the community in Michigan. They have been instrumental in helping us to expand our research in this deadly disease during times of limited allocation of research funds. “
Cruising for the Cure organizers will continue fundraising at the 6th annual Torch Lake Antique and Classic Wooden Boat Rendezvous -- Cruising for the Cure, held July 18-19, 2014 in the Clam River harbor in Bellaire, Mich.
