Tara Revyn and Dr. Uberti on camera with WDIV’s Karen Drew

Karmanos bone marrow transplant patient shares inspirational story

WDIV Local 4’s Live in the D Host Karen Drew interviewed Karmanos patient Tara Revyn about her 10-year wait for a bone marrow match and her successful transplant procedure. Tara’s physician, Joseph Uberti, M.D., Ph.D., division chief of Hematology and co-director of the Bone Marrow Transplant program at Karmanos, discussed how great the need is for everyone, minorities in particular, to become a bone marrow donor through Be the Match, operated by the National Marrow Donor Program. Dr. Uberti and his team at the Karmanos’ BMT program are   recognized as one of the top six programs in the nation for best transplant survival outcomes.

Karmanos’ Lung Cancer Screening Program

Dr. Gadgeel with patient Suzie Friedman

Suzie Friedman, a former smoker for more than 40 years, knew just where to turn once she decided to participate in a lung cancer screening program. The breast cancer survivor had lost her husband to mesothelioma but she credits her time with him to Shirish Gadgeel, M.D., leader of the Thoracic Oncology Multidisciplinary Team at Karmanos. When she heard about Karmanos’ Lung Cancer Screening Program, she reached out to Dr. Gadgeel once again.

Watch Suzie’s heartfelt story, which aired on WDIV Local 4’s 5 p.m. newscast on April 7.

Contributions from the Gianni Ferrarotti Lung Cancer Foundation help offset the cost of the lung cancer screening to help detect lung cancer early for those at high risk of the disease.

Karmanos physicians participate in live web chat on WDIV Local 4

Karmanos physicians were invited to participate in three consecutive, hour-long live web chats at WDIV Local 4’s studio, recently, to answer questions related to specific cancers and cancer screenings. WDIV’s Heath Reporter Dr. Frank McGeorge promoted each of the web chats and interviewed the physicians related to their area of expertise. Karmanos experts included:

Dr. Gadgeel and Laura Mantha answer questions on the live web chat.

  • Isaac Powell, M.D., professor, Department of Urology, Karmanos and WSU, who answered questions related to prostate cancer and PSA screening;
  • Shirish Gadgeel, M.D., leader, Thoracic Oncology Multidisciplinary Team, Karmanos and WSU professor, was joined by Laura Mantha RN, BSN, OCN, research nurse, to answer questions related to lung cancer screening; and
  • Michael Simon, M.D., MPH, leader, Breast Cancer Multidisciplinary Team, and WSU professor, who answered questions related to breast cancer screening and genetic testing.

It was clear by the response from WDIV viewers that these web chats were very well received.
