Karmanos Sponsors November 3 Jazz Ensemble Concert to Promote Bone Marrow Donations, Awareness
Thursday, October 24, 2013
The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute is the major sponsor of a series of jazz ensemble concerts that will also educate the public about becoming donors to the National Bone Marrow Registry and how donations aid in treating various blood disorders.
Detroit-based jazz musician and composer Doug Halladay was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in November 2009, underwent a bone marrow transplant in May 2010, and is now in remission. He is coordinating the concert with his New Beginnings Ensemble.
The ensemble will perform at 4 p.m., Sunday, November 3, at the Historic St. Matthew’s and St. Joseph’s Episcopal Church, 8850 Woodward in Detroit. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door.
The evening’s performance features all original compositions by Halladay, with arrangements by Buddy Budson. He characterizes his work as cutting edge and contemporary and highlights the talent of some of the areas’ finest artists.
Featured artists include Halladay, who will serve as composer; Dwight Adams on trumpet; Vincent Bowens on tenor sax; Budson on piano; Vincent Chandler on trombone; Leslie DeShazor-Adams on viola; Marion Hayden on bass; Gayelynn McKinney on drums; and Ursula Walker on vocals.
“The goal of the event is to raise awareness of the resources available through the Karmanos Cancer Center’s J.P. McCarthy Cord Stem Cell Bank and to raise awareness of the need for donors,” Halladay said. “It’s an opportunity to help the community understand what is involved in becoming a donor and why it is so important.
“I am continually amazed at how little people know about the treatment of blood disorders and how simple it is to become a donor.”
In addition to Karmanos’ sponsorship, the performance is supported by the Societie of the Culturally Concerned. Tickets can be purchased at the Detroit Symphony Box Office, 3711 Woodward in Detroit; by calling (313) 576-5111; or online at www.dso.org
