Rick Thie, Carla Bazaire and Russell Thie of the Jane H. Thie Memorial Fund, Inc. recently presented Philip A. Philip, M.D., Ph.D., leader of the Gastrointestinal Oncology Multidisciplinary Team and Nick Karmanos, senior vice president of Institutional Relations at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, with a $17,000 donation to support Dr. Philip’s pancreatic cancer research.

Funds were raised from an annual event called “Cruising for the Cure Torch Lake Rendezvous.” It has been held for the last three years in the harbors of Clam River near Torch Lake in Bellaire, Mich., and is hosted and organized by the Jane H. Thie Memorial Fund. The event includes an antique and classic wooden boat show and parade of boats held in memory of the late Jane Thie.
Jane, mother of Rick, Russell, Diana, and Carla, was a patient of Dr. Philip’s when she was being treated for pancreatic cancer. The family was so appreciative of the care that their mother received while undergoing treatment that after she passed away in 2007, they decided to start an organization to benefit pancreatic cancer research. Dr. Philip’s research was their first choice.
“We are extremely appreciative of the Thie family for all they do to benefit pancreatic research at the Karmanos Cancer Institute,” said Dr. Philip. “This is a cancer that is difficult to diagnose at its early stages. Research dollars for pancreatic cancer also lags significantly behind funding for other cancers. We thank the Thie family for making a real difference in our search for a cure for this cancer. “
In addition to the annual event, net proceeds from the sale of calendars and apparel on the Cruising for the Cure Web site benefits the Barbara Ann Karmanos Center Institute. You can purchase yours today by visiting the eShop.
Over the past three years, the Jane H. Thie Memorial Fund, Inc. has donated a total of over $28,000 and they are already gearing up for next year’s event. The 2011 “Cruising for the Cure,” held on July 22 and 23, was their biggest year yet and they plan to raise even more funding in 2012. The 2012 “Cruising for the Cure” will take place July 20-21 at Torch Lake near Bellair, Mich.
