The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Center’s Stem Cell & Bone Marrow Transplant Program has recently been acknowledged with three special distinctions for the high-quality services it provides patients and those seeking transplants through the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP).
The NMDP is honoring Karmanos’ program for facilitating 25,000 transplants via its registry, as well as performing 250 marrow collections on behalf of the national program.
Karmanos BMT program also is celebrating its 10-year anniversary as one of the few sites to be awarded accreditation from the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT). Karmanos’ program has been accredited since the first edition of the FACT standards was created.
FACT establishes standards for high quality medical and laboratory practice in cellular therapies. FACT, formed in 1996, is a non-profit corporation co-founded by the International Society for Cellular Therapy (ISCT) and the American Society of Blood and Marrow Transplantation (ASBMT) for the purposes of voluntary inspection and accreditation in the field of cellular therapy.
