Congratulations to Andre Konski, M.D., MBA, clinical service chief of Radiation Oncology Services at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute and Wayne State University School of Medicine, for the publication of his recent editorial titled, “The War on Cancer: Progress at What Price?” in the April 20, 2011, edition of the Journal of Clinical Oncology.
Dr. Konski writes that health care products and services are becoming an increasing percentage of the U.S. gross domestic product and that although health care spending growth decelerated in 2009 in the U.S., it still increased 4.0 percent in 2009, reaching $2.5 trillion and making health care products/services 17.6 percent of the gross domestic product, compared with 16.6 percent in 2008.
Dr. Konski states that this increase affects the competitiveness of U.S. businesses, considering that more money is used to provide employee health care rather than funding improved production efficiency and research and development.
