2012 FRIENDS FOR THE CURE® DONATIONS PROGRAM

Less talk. More action.
Our collective promise to Suzy is a promise to all women, everywhere, to do what we can to end suffering from breast cancer.

Last year, the Friends for the Cure® program raised over $1.1 million! (Scroll down to see 2011 winners.) That’s 48% of total Komen Detroit revenue of $2.3 million. Our goal is to break the fundraising record and raise $1,200,000 in 2012. We hope everyone will be part of this. Without this funding, our community could lose lifesaving local programs and research dollars.

There are two ways to participate: online fundraising which includes your own personal donation page (received when you register online) and manually by using the paper copy of the Friends for the Cure® form and mailing it in with your donations or turning them in on Race day at the Friends booth. This form is also available online.

Manual (offline) donations will be added to your online fundraising total by Komen Detroit staff once received at the office. The level of recognition and rewards will be based on the fundraiser’s total of online and manual (offline) donations. Donations must be received by July 1, 2012 to qualify for 2012 Friends for the Cure® incentives and awards. All awards will be presented at the September 19, 2012 Celebration. Incentives will begin mailing out in August 2012.

Please make checks payable to: Komen Detroit Race for the Cure. Offline donations will be combined with your online fundraising totals by staff. Offline donations can only be entered by Komen Detroit staff and will be added to your online personal donation page, appearing as "Offline Donation-Friends Form." This process typically takes one to two weeks after receipt.

If you are NOT registering for the Race but would like to raise funds and qualify for awards and incentives you must set up set up a personal donation page. For instructions on this, please contact Active technical support (“Consumer Services Department”) at (877) 228-4881 and choose option 2.

Matching Gift Programs/Stock

Donations can be doubled or even tripled when participating organizations match funds. Check with your company's Human Resources Department (or the department you know manages donation programs) to see if a matching program exists or can be created. Please submit completed matching forms when you turn in your Friends for the Cure® donations. Click here for a list of organizations that may match Komen Detroit Race donations. (Please contact us if you have additions or updates to this list: raceforthecure@karmanos.org)

Your broker can assist you in making a gift of stock via a direct transfer to Susan G. Komen for the Cure®. Giving a gift of publicly traded stock that has increased in value and that you have owned for more than one year may provide greater tax benefits than giving cash. Your charitable income tax deduction is equal to the fair market value of the stock and you avoid paying the capital gains tax on any increase in the current value over the original cost of the stock. You may also save by not incurring brokerage fees because you are transferring ownership rather than selling the stock.
