Welcome to the 19th Annual Susan G. Komen Detroit Race for the Cure®, locally presented by the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute
A breast cancer diagnosis is given around the globe every 29 seconds, in the U.S. every three minutes. This year, more than 40,000 lives will be lost to breast cancer in the U.S. alone, and 1,300 of those lives will be from Michigan.
We are continuing our advancements in research, which will one day turn breast cancer from a destructive disease to a treatable condition. Hundreds of breast cancer survivors are walking and running here with us today. They are here because of the advances in prevention, early detection, advanced diagnosis and treatment. Many advances have been discovered here at the Karmanos Cancer Institute, such as our work in isolating and preserving the world's most prominent breast cancer cell line for research.
After more than 10 years of research and development, Karmanos recently announced its launch of a new company to build and market a breast cancer screening device invented at Karmanos. What differentiates this new system from mammography, the current gold standard for breast cancer screening, is that this unique technology helps to accurately detect many early stages of breast cancer even in women with dense breast tissue, often not picked up by mammography. It also doesn't involve compression or use x-rays. The process to secure approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is underway.
The Karmanos Cancer Institute and Susan G. Komen for the Cure have a remarkable partnership and have made a lot of progress over the years. Both organizations are grateful to all supporters who share our commitment to breast cancer.
The Komen Detroit Race is the largest in Michigan and among the largest nationwide. Seventy-five percent of the Race proceeds stays in metro Detroit to support breast cancer screening, education and special treatment programs. Twenty-five percent goes to Komen's national breast cancer research grant program. Last year's Race returned $1.5 million to local breast cancer screening, treatment and education programs. Going into our 19th year, Detroit's Race has raised more than $17.5 million in the fight to end breast cancer forever.
Thank you for taking an active role and participating in our 2010 Komen Detroit Race for the Cure®. Your involvement in this great cause will help bring about a future free of cancer.
Sincerely,
Gerold Bepler, M.D., Ph.D.
