FUNDRAISING FORUM

HPLast year Komen Detroit fundraisers made our 20th annual Race extra special by raising more dollars than ever. The Race awarded $1.47 million in local community grants and an additional $422,000 toward national research. Teams were very instrumental in this impressive outcome.

As a Team Captain you have a great opportunity to reach your members with key messages and a goal. As you know, all teams are expected to raise at least $100. We know all of you can achieve this and are ready, willing and able to do more, evident in the goals you set when your teams were created. One of the main reasons a participant fundraises is the Team Captain's goal. Combined with your leadership and encouragement, your goal is the key to success. Please review all the team and individual incentives in your Team Captain Kit. We would love to see you on stage at the September Celebration receiving a fundraising award.

DID YOU KNOW?

  • Komen has spent an average of 84 cents for every dollar raised in the previous five years, earning the prestigious four-star Charity Navigator ranking for five years running.
  • A total of $283 million was devoted to mission spending (research, community health) last year.
  • From one race with 800 participants in Dallas in 1983, the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure series now totals more than 140 races worldwide, with more than 1.7 million participants annually. The Race is an opportunity to engage with the breast cancer family, honoring survivors and loved ones, while raising funds for Komen research and outreach programs. You are part of a global movement.

Don't keep your great ideas to yourself - share your big hits. Your successful fundraiser may be just what other teams are looking for. If you have an upcoming fundraiser that's open to the public, email Sandy and we might include it in our February newsletter.

NOTE: The fundraiser must take place after February 10th to be included in the next newsletter.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do team members have to fundraise?

All teams are expected to raise at least $100. Team fundraising represents 75% of total donations, and fundraising as a whole represents 50% of total Detroit Race revenue. Team fundraising is EXTREMELY important in our fight to end breast cancer forever.

Everyone receives a personal donation upon registration. Each team member should use her/his own page, not the team page, to solicit donations. All donations received on a member's personal page roll into the team total. We have some wonderful incentives and we want to make sure we deliver them to the proper individuals. If your members want to solicit donations offline, click here for a manual donation form, or call the Komen Detroit office for assistance. Race packets picked up by the Team Captain will include a manual donation form. Your teammates have until July 1, 2012 to raise funds and qualify for 2012 incentives and awards.

How should teams members register?

Online. It's easier for you, your team members and us. Online registration allows each team member to establish a personalized online fundraising page, set a goal and start fundraising early to help end breast cancer forever. Step-by-step instructions are included in the Tips-Tools-Forms section of the Team Captain Kit.

Can team members register at New Balance Registration Sites?

No. Team members must register online for your team by midnight May 8, 2012 OR complete a paper registration form which the Team Captain must submit with all other manual entries by April 30, 2012 (see DATES, DEADLINES & DETAILS of the Team Captain Kit for more information). Remember, children 5 and under are free, but must be registered. The little ones count in your official team size.

How can people register after the team registration deadline?

Anyone who misses the team registration deadlines above may register as an individual online or at a one-stop registration site. These individuals can still walk or run with your team, but will not be counted in team totals for awards consideration.

We encourage you to email us with your questions. Your questions will help us with next month's FAQ section.

SPONSORSHIP & TEAM BUILDING

Have you shared our 2012 Sponsorship opportunities with your employer? Help your company give back to the community in a big way-- by joining in the fight against breast cancer.

Opportunities for your employer to cover the cost of employees registering for the Race are also available by completing our Pay Later form- available upon request.

A NOTE FROM JAN TEBELMAN

I had the privilege of accepting a check from the National Honor Society of Lakeshore High School just before the holidays. They sold pink shoelaces to all of their sports teams to promote awareness and raise dollars for the fight against breast cancer. It was wonderful to meet this great group of teenagers and listen to their ideas about what young people can accomplish. I'll be working with them to establish a school team from Lakeshore. I hope this becomes a yearly event for them. Congratulations to NHS President Alec Lettner and all the members of Lakeshore NHS.

Please encourage young people to get involved with our work. It can establish a life of service to the community in which they live. And remind them to BE PROUD of their involvement. They are the future in the fight against breast cancer.

A FINAL NOTE FROM THE TEAMS CHAIRS

We are thrilled to see 2012 team commitment is off to a great start. We look forward to meeting new Team Captains, as well as welcoming back our veteran leaders. Don't forget to send questions to Bob "The Answer Man." But we'd also love to hear from you at any time to let us know how you are doing or share a success story - or just say hi!

We hope your holidays were peaceful and filled with family and friends. May the New Year bring us all peace, health, and a renewed sense of purpose in the fight against breast cancer.
