Many studies show that staying within a normal weight range decreases the risk of several chronic diseases, including several types of cancer. Achieving a healthy weight or body fat composition through eating a balanced diet and increasing physical activity is recommended; restrictive dieting is not recommended.
Try to exercise at least 30 minutes daily with a low to moderate level activity such as brisk walking. This is especially important if you do not have an occupation or home lifestyle that requires physical activity or exertion.
TIP: Even simple activities help you burn calories: Park as far from the store entrance as you can, take the stairs every chance you get, take a walk before dinner, take a walk everyday at lunch time, stretch every night before bed. Think of it as a free health club membership!
TIP: Snack on fruits and vegetables before going to a party to curb your appetite. Avoid alcohol since it provides calories and no nutrients.
TIP: Try starting with smaller portions of food at meals, and take more if you are still hungry. Eat slowly and enjoy your meals.
TIP: Limit high fat foods that are loaded with calories. Fruits, vegetables, and breads fill your stomach up with fewer calories than fried foods and sweets.
