Selenium is a trace mineral that functions as an antioxidant. It is necessary for the production of glutathione peroxidase, an enzyme that catalyzes the breakdown of hyperoxides. Vitamin E functions together with selenium to protect cells against oxidative damage, damage which could possibly increase risk of cancer, heart disease and other health problems.

Selenium is found quite abundantly in our food supply. The richest sources are seafood, liver, kidney and other meats. Grains and seeds also contain selenium, but the amount varies depending on the selenium content of the soil in which they are grown.

The Recommended Dietary Allowance for selenium is 70 micrograms for men and 50 micrograms for women. Most people easily obtain this level from their diet. Extremely high levels from dietary supplements can be harmful. Too much can cause nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, nail and hair changes, nerve damage, fatigue, and irritability.
