Restorative Yoga focuses on relaxing the body in restful postures. Numerous studies have shown that rest provides the body an opportunity to renew and heal making the physical and emotional benefits extremely beneficial. In this class you will learn techniques that you can utilize on your own that will help your body receive the proper relaxation it needs to keep you healthy. All you need is a mat to participate. This is a beginner’s class so you do not need to be experienced in yoga. Future yoga classes will be offered at the downtown Karmanos location.

Featuring: Gordon MacKinnon, Ph.D., clinical psychologist
Being stressed out doesn’t feel good and it can impact your ability to heal. In addition, stress can take a physical and emotional toll on survivors; but there are ways to decrease your stress levels. In this workshop, you will learn specific strategies to help you combat stress and increase your chances of survival from cancer. Come and hear prostate cancer survivor and clinical psychologist, Gordon MacKinnon, Ph.D., help you map out a plan to combat stress.

F615: Parenting Through Cancer

Featuring: Gail Singer, LPC
Parents faced with a cancer diagnosis are doubly faced with the task of helping their children cope while trying to acquire their own coping skills to help them on their cancer journey. This class will be presented by Gail Singer, a licensed counselor, cancer survivor and mother who will provide you with tools you can use to effectively speak to your children about your diagnosis, understand how cancer affects the family roles, develop coping strategies, find support systems, and explore grief and loss issues. This session will motivate you to take advantage of this challenging period as a time to build your communication skills with your child and develop a better understanding of each other's perspectives. Come and educate yourself, your family and -- as much as is appropriate -- your child about cancer and its treatments.

F616: Life After Cancer Treatment: Now What?

Featuring: Isaac Powell, M.D., Michelle Thomas, M.D.
Those who have gone through cancer treatment describe the first few months as a time of change. It's not so much getting back to normal as it is finding out what's normal for you now. You can also expect things to keep changing as you begin your recovery. Come explore how your new "normal" may include making changes in the way you eat, the things you do and your sources of support. In this half-day workshop, you will hear survivors and clinicians describe how they personally handled life after cancer treatment and ways you can develop skills that will help you to survive. Lunch will be provided for $10.

Finding Humor, Hope and Balance on the Cancer Journey
Renowned Comedian, world-class juggler, author and cancer survivor, Scott Burton will speak about finding balance and hope through humor and laughter. He will share how he overcame his own battle with osteo-sarcoma and much more. Also, Local 4 Meteorologist Paul Gross will serve as Emcee!
The Patricia Milner Sachs Heart of a Survivor Award will be presented at this celebration. There will be one winner, but all nominees will be recognized.
