An estimated two-thirds of all cancers are preventable. Furthermore, most adults with cancer do not participate in clinical trials -- studies of the newest therapies that are widely considered among patients' best options.
Information and education are key to cancer prevention, early detection and to sound decision making about treatment options. The Institute offers the following information/ education resources:

The National Cancer Institute's Cancer Information Service: Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States, and a critical strategy in cancer control efforts is the education of Americans about steps they can take to prevent cancer, detect it early when treatment is most likely to be effective, and choose the best treatment plan. The CIS is the National Cancer Institute's link to the public, interpreting and explaining research findings in a clear and understandable manner, and providing personalized responses to specific questions about cancer. Community Education: Institute staff and volunteers visit businesses, churches, schools, shopping malls, health care forums and virtually any venue conducive to informing individuals on ways to prevent cancer and its warning signs, and the very latest in screening, diagnostics, treatment and followup care through educational presentations, materials and displays.
The Education and Resource Center: The Education and Resource Center (ERC) is a patient and family focused health library with the latest information on cancer care, including disease and treatment information, coping and support, integrative medicine and prevention.
Fact Sheets: A series of free materials ("What You Should Know") on various topics geared to the nonpatient.
Genetics Educational Sessions: Offered on a regular basis at the Institute and by appointment. Participants learn about inherited breast and ovarian cancer and how to reduce their risk.
Glossary: A comprehensive list of phrases essential to each patient and his/her family.
