Community Education

The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute offers education and awareness programs presented by its physicians and researchers, community education staff members, and trained volunteers.

These experts present information on cancer prevention, risk and its reduction, and testing guidelines. Programs are available to businesses, religious congregations and social/community groups in southeastern Michigan.

Educational Displays 

  • A display consists of colorful cancer related prevention and early detection information. 
  • Models are used to provide hands on activities. Giveaways are provided, when available.
  • Staffed by volunteers or Institute community education department members.

S.H.I.E.L.D. 

  • A free sun safety program that provides information on how to protect the skin from the sun, signs of sun damage and skin cancer risk factors. 
  • This program is tailored for adults and school-aged children.

Tar Wars

  • A free tobacco-free education program for fourth- and fifth-grade students. 
  • Designed to teach kids about the short-term, image-based consequences of tobacco use, the cost associated with using tobacco products, and the advertising techniques used by the tobacco industry to market their products to youth.  
  • A follow-up poster contest is conducted at the school, state, and national level to reinforce the Tar Wars message.

Speakers Bureau

  • Tailored talks created to fit your specific needs.
  • Includes staff and experts available to address your group on the cancer topic of interest.
