The Karmanos Cancer Center offers the Varian iX linear accelerator, a state-of-the-art image-guided radiation therapy technology. The Varian iX is available at both our Detroit campus and Farmington Hills center.
The Varian iX provides the most precise treatment delivery available because it is image guided, using both x-ray and cone-beam CAT scan technology to search for cancer and precisely deliver radiation to the right location.
This important technology responds to the variety of physiological factors which can cause the location and shape of a patient’s tumor(s) and normal tissue structures to change during the course of therapy, including weight fluctuation and even breathing during treatment.
Before each treatment, the Varian iX allows physicians to identify exactly where cancerous cells end and healthy cells begin.
In addition, it provides faster treatment through its volumetric arc therapy (Varian’s RapidArc®). How fast? These linear accelerators allow Karmanos to deliver a highly conformal dose of radiation in a continuous arc around the patient in only 1 to 2 minutes. The faster the treatment is delivered, the less time the patient’s internal and external anatomy has to move after image guidance is completed.
- More precise targeting helps medical experts deliver enough radiation to a moving tumor to eliminate it, while minimizing the amount of healthy tissue exposed to the radiation.
- The ability to provide faster treatment reduces patient discomfort.
The Varian iX can be used on any cancer disease site treated with radiation therapy.
