Overview
Affiliates of Susan G. Komen for the Cure represent one of the nation’s
largest funding sources for breast health and breast cancer screening,
education and treatment support programs.
The Komen Detroit Race for the CureŽ, through its local presenting
sponsor the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, offers grants for
innovative projects in the areas of breast health and/or breast cancer
education/outreach, screening, or treatment support projects targeting
services not otherwise available to the medically underserved
communities of the Metropolitan Detroit area.
Community Profile
A community needs assessment of the Metropolitan Detroit area has
identified the following as the most pressing needs with the
greatest likelihood of positive impact:
- Expanding awareness of the Breast and Cervical Cancer Control
Program within the target audience and among primary care and other
health care providers;
- Addressing screening and treatment gaps for the “working poor;”
- Targeting educational messages about the impact of clinical
trials, especially in minority communities.
Only projects which address these needs will be considered for
funding.
