Since 1982, the Susan G. Komen for the Cure has provided funding for basic, clinical and translational breast cancer research and for innovative projects in the areas of breast health education and breast cancer screening and treatment. In addition, Komen for the Cure awards three-year postdoctoral fellowships to individuals working under the guidance of experienced cancer researchers in order to recruit and retain young scientists in the field of breast cancer research. The Komen Detroit Race for the CureŽ, through its local presenting sponsor the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, offers grants for innovative projects in the areas of breast health and/or breast cancer education/outreach, screening, or treatment support projects targeting services not otherwise available to the medically underserved communities of the Metropolitan Detroit area.

Community Profile

Based on 2009 Community Profile data, the following needs were identified by the team as having the highest priority. All Komen Detroit 2009 Race for the Cure grant applications must address one or more of the following funding priorities:

  1. Increased delivery of mammography screening to those most in need,
  2. Addressing outreach and education gaps to increase minority participation in clinical trials,
  3. Encouraging innovative collaboration among community organizations to develop programs that will both:
    • increase awareness and promote earlier detection of breast cancer in underserved populations,
    • and demonstrate an increase in screening rates.
  4. Programs intended to maintain continuity of care by providing patient navigation and coverage of care-related costs such as transportation, parking, and temporary bridge insurance co-pays.
