2012 TEAM CAPTAIN KIT

The 2012 Team Captain Kit is now available. Click here to download this important document. A must for all Team Captains.

THE TIME TO REGISTER IS NOW

Wow! 107 teams are already on board, including 18 new teams. Not only do they have a jump on fundraising but they capitalized on our Early Bird Pricing - through January 1, 2012. For more than five years, the Komen Detroit Race for the Cure has been able to maintain the same registration fees. However, expenses to make your Race day experience spectacular have increased. To keep mission funding at a maximum level, this year's pricing has changed and we are offering a special price to our early birds.

Congratulations to Five Brothers-Securing a Cure. They are the first "official" team with 13 members.

Ask your team members to register now for the $25 Early Bird Fee for adults (individuals, as well as team members) through January 1, 2012. January 2nd, adult team members move to $30. These fees represent ONLINE PRICING ONLY - please encourage everyone to register online.

FYI: Special youth and senior pricing, as well as free entries for children 5 and under, remain intact.

FUNDRAISING FORUM

Team Captains have an enormous impact on Komen Detroit fundraising. You are the foundation that allows us to help our neighbors with few resources and continue the remarkable work of scientists here and around the world. To do this, you have two fundraising pages to manage.

Team Page: This will show all team member donations and direct donations to your team as one total. This page is automatically produced once you establish your team (there is no fee to establish your team, but you must register yourself for which there is a fee). A link to the page is emailed to you when you create your team.

Individual Page: This is the page you should use to solicit donations from your friends and family.  The link to your personal page is emailed to you once you complete your personal registration. All donations made to your personal page will roll into the team total. We always encourage Team Captains, and team members, to use your personal fundraising page to solicit donations. Incentives are awarded based on personal page totals. Click here for instructions on how to manage your team and personal fundraising pages.

We'll see you at one or more of the events where we honor people just lik you!

JUST ASK!

If you're new to fundraising, there's lots of help available. If you've collected donations in the past, you know the easiest way is by sending an email. It's that simple! You might be surprised to know that many people are just waiting to be asked. Try this -- especially for out-of-towners who can't join us on Race day.

To my Dear Friends and Family,

As you know, breast cancer has touched us all. So I'm taking a bold step and participating in the Komen Detroit Race for the Cure on Saturday, May 26th, 2012.

I'm joining the movement to end breast cancer forever because every 3 minutes, a woman in the United States dies of breast cancer. Worldwide, that figure is at 74 seconds. I wish we could all walk together. It's so inspiring to know that I will be a part of something that is actually saving lives. And even though we won't be together on that morning, you can still be part of the CURE!

I've set my personal goal at $[INSERT GOAL AMOUNT]. So I'm hoping you will help me reach my goal. You can donate online safely and securely at http://www.active.com/donate/detroitRFTC12/[YOUR FUNDRAISING PAGE].

75% net raised by Komen Detroit stays in metro Detroit to fund vital breast education, screening and treatment programs. The need in this community is so great. The remaining 25% is contributed to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure National Award & Research Grant Program, to fun groundbreaking breast cancer research.

This holiday season, consider a donation in someone's honor. It is one of the best gifts you can give. Your gift will make a difference. I thank you in advance. Your generosity saves lives!

Wishing very healthy and happy holidays to you all.

[Your Name]

P.S. Ask your employer to double your donation through a matching gift program!

SIZE MATTERS

Just as small breast cancers detected very early have the greatest potential for cure, large donations make the greatest impact.

Help donors understand and build breast cancer awareness at the same time.

A donation of $74 relates to a global death from breast cancer every 74 seconds. A $40 donation ties to the approximately 40,000 U.S. women who will die this year. A $30 donation represents the 30% drop in breast cancer mortality since 1990. A $21 donation for our 21st annual Komen Detroit Race for the Cure.

People will give what they can. It might be more if you ask for more in a meaningful way.

FUN FUNdraising EVENTS

A holiday toast to Captain Hope Bradford who's already kicked off her Kelly Services Cancer Crusaders' fundraising with extended jeans days and a Holiday Bazaar at Kelly Services World Headquarters. Kelly Services Jeans Day options include: $20 per week; $15 per week with a "pink promise" to wear something pink at least one day a week; or $5 per day.

For more corporate/community organization fundraising ideas check out page 19 of the Team Captain Kit.

You can also check out the Team Captain Kit for a list of some great fundraising ideas. Consider partnering with a local restaurant. Many establishments offer a percent of purchase fundraiser with a flyer you distribute for diners to bring in on a pre-set date. We all have to eat, right?

Some important tips:

1. Date flexibility. Restaurants typically want to do fundraisers during the week, so pick Monday through Thursday dates.

955 Donation2. Promote the event. Some restaurants will give you flyers and stickers to hand out, while others ask you to create your own flyers. CHECK WITH THE KOMEN DETROIT OFFICE BEFORE PRINTING OR PUBLISHING. Promote the event via email and social networking. Make sure everyone YOU know is aware of the fundraiser and encourage them to tell everyone THEY know. (Remember to ask the Komen Detroit office for breast health information to distribute.)

3. Get volunteers to help you the day of the fundraiser. Greeting your donors as they come in the door is always a plus. Find out what the restaurant will allow. You might be able to collect tips for even more funds.

Do you have a fundraising event you would like to tell us about? It might show up in our next next Teams Captains Newsletter. Send details of the event to Sandy Jessop at sjessop@att.net.

WHY BECOME A TEAM--- LESS TALK...MORE ACTION

Teamwork -A team gives people an opportunity to volunteer their time, talent, and dollars together to make a difference in our world and have fun doing it! Support community involvement. Take up the challenge of finding a cure by raising funds through the Friends for the Cure program.

Education - As a team, you inspire others to learn about breast cancer and early detection, to encourage women to learn about their personal risk, to have yearly clinical exams and mammograms, and to teach others about Komen and its mission - to end breast cancer forever.

Awards - Working together, you can accomplish great things. Make your fundraising goal reach even further. Strive to build the largest team possible, with every member raising funds. Our generous sponsors continue to award our teams for their achievement in 2012.

Motivation - Turn talk into action. Spread the word, asking people to donate, get screened and advocate for strong breast cancer public policy. Tell everyone you know about the urgency of this cause and about the many ways they can help.

After three decades of progress, we are much closer to our vision. But we are at risk of losing ground. It's alarming that fewer than 50% of women age 40+ with insurance get an annual mammogram. We know that the number of women without health insurance is growing with few options for screening or quality cancer treatment. Programs that help women without insurance are threatened. Sadly, people are still dying from breast cancer- somewhere in the world, a woman dies of breast cancer every 74 seconds.

This is simply unacceptable because we know early detection saves lives.

We're calling for "Less Talk. More Action." We're going to turn the tide and drive people to action. With your help, we will beat this disease that will kill almost 500,000 - making it the 2nd leading killer of women worldwide.

We must act. We must encourage others to act-- with their feet, with their voices, and with their dollars.

LESS TALK ... MORE ACTION

YOU have the power to make the difference!

The holiday season can also be a stressful time - especially so to someone battling an illness. Please remember why we do this. Or, call the office and Komen Detroit staff and volunteers will do whatever possible to provide support and navigation to resources.Jan and Sandy_Stage
