Dr. George Wilson has 25 years experience in cancer biology and became a member of the Cancer Institute in July 2002. In November 2005, he took up an appointment in Radiation Oncology at William Beaumont Hospital. Dr Wilson began using flow cytometry 20 years ago and became an international expert in the use of this technique in measuring proliferation in human tumors. He was a pioneer of the use of halogenated pyrimidines (bromodeoxyuridine and iododeoxyuridine) administration to patients to measure potential doubling times (Tpots) in vivo using a delayed biopsy technique and two-parameter flow cytometry. He established many international collaborations to assess the clinical impact of these measurements in many tumor types particularly those treated by radiotherapy. Dr. Wilson has published over 160 articles, reviews and book chapters. Dr. Wilson was appointed Scientific Director of the Core Facility in 2003. Dr. Wilson received his B.Sc. (Zoology) and Ph.D. (Endocrinology) at Liverpool University in 1974 and 1978 respectively.
Mr. Eric Van Buren has been Flow Operator for the Karmanos Cancer Institute flow facility since 1995, and the Dept. of Immunology & Microbiology flow facility from 1990 until its dissolution in 2004. He has received extensive manufacturers training in flow cytometry. He has been an author on papers and abstracts using flow cytometric technology, and has presented at several of the Metro Detroit Cytometry Group meetings. In addition to the implementation of simple flow cytometric tasks, Mr. Van Buren has helped users undertake more complex procedures such as side population (SP) sorting, calcium flux studies, oxidative burst studies, apoptosis analyses, DNA cell cycle analyses, dual-laser 5-color analyses, multi-color cell sorting and cell cloning. He received both his B.S. in Chemistry and his B.S. in Computational Mathematics from Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan. top
Mr. Don Boyer plays an indispensable role in the day-to-day operations of the Core. He received training from BD Biosciences Immunocytometry Systems in the operation of the FACSAria in 2003. He assists users in many simple and complex flow cytometric procedures. He trains new users in the operation of the cytometers and the facility. Mr. Boyer received his B.S. in Biology from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan. top
