Sista Strut Walk, Pink Gala raise funds for Karmanos’ Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program

Supporters for Wayne County’s Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program (BCCCP), administered by the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, strutted it out recently and raised $7,623 to benefit the program through the 15th annual Sista Strut Walk and Pink Gala.

The Pink Gala, presented by radio station Mix 92.3 WMXD, is the opening night celebration for the annual Sista Strut Walk and featured an evening of music with Melanie Fiona & Anthony David and a celebration of the survivorship spirit. The event took place at Pi Banquet Hall in Southfield.

The Sista Strut Walk event took place at the Detroit Riverwalk-Rivard Plaza in Detroit, attracting approximately 400 people who bundled up against the cold to fight breast cancer. Both events support BCCCP, which provides breast and cervical cancer screenings and diagnostic follow-up for uninsured and underinsured women 40-64, living in the city of Detroit and throughout the county.

Officials from Karmanos Cancer Institute, along with Mix 92.3 on-air staff, city officials and radio listeners came out to walk for those with the disease. Statistics are sobering: More than 65 percent of all breast cancer diagnoses are in African-American women, indicating a great need for services such as those administered through BCCCP.

“We are immensely grateful for those who took part in the Sista Strut Walk and Pink Gala to raise funds for low-income women in Wayne County,” said Nick Karmanos, senior vice president of Institutional Relations at Karmanos. “Each fundraiser like this one helps to further Karmanos’ mission of bringing cancer under complete control.”
